A.A.O’s Policy for Laboratory Safety
- New Students
must receive an introductory lecture about safety in the laboratory prior to the
use of the lab.
-
Every Lab should have a safety manual that gives guidance to the procedures relevant
to the nature of the lab. For example mechanical workshops will have rotating equipment
(e.g. lathe machines) and welding equipment. Chemical Engineering Labs typically
handle a variety of chemicals. Civil Engineering labs typically handle particulate matter and heavy structures.
Electrical Engineering labs have hazards of electrocution. The safety manual should include general safety instructions as well as specific instructions related to the nature
of hazards in the concerned lab.
- Wearing the standard safety protection gear is a must for
using the lab. Lab coats and safety glasses, are a minimum. Helmets, safety shoes,
gloves (type depends on application), face shields, masks, etc must be used if the
situation requires them.
- Safety signs, fire
exits, emergency telephones and first aid kits must be available in each lab.
- Eye washes, showers
and spill kits must be available in labs that hand chemicals.
- Ventilation must be
appropriate (according to standards)
in labs that’s handle chemicals and particular matter.
- No students should work in the lab unless a technician
is present
- No chemicals should
be deposited in the drainage system. Waste chemicals must be placed in waste drams. Disposal
of these chemicals should be arranged with the safety office.
- Technicians must be trained for safety regularly.
- Faculty, technicians and students must be
trained for using fire extinguishers.
